Best methods to handle motor back‑EMF in DIY builds

Been messing with a small DIY motor setup and every time it kicks off I’m getting some nasty back-EMF spikes that make the rest of my circuit twitchy. I’ve tried a couple basic fixes but nothing feels clean yet.

What’s your preferred way to tame back-EMF in your projects? Curious what’s actually worked for you without overcomplicating things.
 
I ran into a similar situation on a small robotics project whenever the motors stopped the spikes caused my sensors to act up. A simple solution was to install a flyback diode across the motor leads which cleaned everything up quickly and didn’t add much complexity
 
I had a project that included a small 5V thermal printer. I finally decided it needed its own 5V regulator to isolate the motor noise from the processor circuitry. It was really just a single 7805 three-lead regulator fastened to the same heat sink.
 
It’s impressive how diodes and some isolation can make such a difference. It’s amazing that these straightforward solutions can really tidy up all that motor mess.
