Bipolar vs MOSFET power stages which one should you choose?

If you’re diving into a hobby circuit, you’re probably weighing efficiency, heat, and switching losses. Bipolar has that classic vibe, while MOSFET brings a modern touch but which one truly shines for your project? We’d love to hear your stories, tips, or even your 'I can’t stand that heat sink' rants.
 
I’ve dealt with a toasted heat sink before. I initially used bipolar transistors out of habit, but once I switched to MOSFETs for a small motor project, managing efficiency and heat became a lot easier. I haven't looked back since.
 
It really depends on the project. Bipolar transistors have that old-school charm and are pretty forgiving, while MOSFETs are cleaner and cooler. If heat management is a concern, I usually skip the hassle and go with MOSFETs.
 
For low-power analog applications, I still find bipolar transistors to be reliable.
But when it comes to fast switching or handling heavy current, MOSFETs are always the better option unless you’re a fan of bulky heat sinks.
