How to check for thermal issues on regulators and drivers

Detecting thermal issues in regulators and drivers can be a real challenge, especially when strange circuit behavior only pops up after things start to heat up.
It’s enough to drive anyone crazy! So, how can you identify those overheating components before they give up on you?
I’d love to hear about your favorite tests, tools, and those subtle signs you look for.
 
I had a board that seemed to work perfectly for five minutes, then suddenly started acting up when it got hot. Now, I stress-test regulators and drivers with load cycles and keep an eye on the temperature. Those tiny hot spots and gradual voltage shifts are the silent killers you catch them early, and the circuit stays happy.
 
I once saw a driver slowly overheat during a lengthy test, thinking it was just some 'quirky behavior.'
Thankfully, a simple IR thermometer and thermal camera saved me from a meltdown later on.
Those hot spots don’t lie catching them early can help you avoid a fried board and a whole lot of headaches.
 
After one project fried half my test rig, I learned to check regulators and drivers under load, not just when they were idle. A little pre-heat cycling and careful touch tests can quickly reveal stress points. It’s incredible how subtle color changes or even a whiff of something off can give you a heads-up before the magic smoke makes an appearance.
 
In the beginning, I brushed off slight voltage dips, thinking they were just part of the deal. But once I started logging temp and current, those overheating regulators became glaringly obvious. Even a budget-friendly IR thermometer during a warm-up cycle can save your components and your sanity before a failure ruins your day
 
I believe you can still buy a “cold can” - an aerosol can with an evaporative refrigerant (chemistry has changed with knowledge of pollution effects) that can be sprayed on components that are maybe heating up too quickly.

I’ve had the occasional resistor start to glow on my breadboards, and plenty of times when “the smoke got out” of a semiconductor. It was usually a wiring error, but oscillating opamp ICs can heat up in a big hurry!
