You’ve likely faced this decision before. Sometimes, a straightforward linear regulator does the trick, while other times, a switching regulator is the better option for efficiency or managing larger loads. Each type has its own advantages depending on the project at hand.

So, how do you make the call between the two, and what factors lead you to favor one over the other?

In college, a blinking LED project gave me fits. I borrowed some cheap multimeter, and boom, wiring problem solved. been my go-to ever since.

I was wiring a DIY power supply for my first major project. It just kept tripping. A friend let me use a logic analyzer, and that's when I saw the data flow, and it instantly made sense. Now I always have one around for any tricky digital circuits.

When I began messing with old radios, guessing seemed like a plan. Then I got a basic oscilloscope, and it showed me what was going on with the signal. Saved me a ton of time.
