Pre-solder circuit testing tips

How do you usually test a circuit before you dive into soldering it all together? Do you whip out a multimeter, play around on a breadboard, or maybe run a simulation? I’m curious to know what your secret weapon is

I usually start with a breadboard to catch any layout problems. Then, I do a quick simulation to make sure everything is working as expected. After that, I use a multimeter to double-check the continuity and voltage.

I definitely build a “breadboard” of the circuit. These days, since I no longer expect to go into production, the breadboard might end up as the physical device I use.

Over the years, the breadboards have usually been built on a piece of perforated fiberglass-filled epoxy material, nkown as “Vectorboard,” although there are other manufacturers. Connections are usually done with soldered jumper wires, although I still wire-wrap some projects.

Appreciate the detailed reply, using Vectorboard and wire-wrap is a really good idea. I like that you treat the breadboard as the final build, that's a smart, practical way to test and use the same setup.
