Solder joints keep cracking

So, I was messing with this little electronics project the other night and man no matter how hard I tried to solder neatly the joints kept breaking as soon as I touched the board.

Has that ever happened to you? What usually makes that happen and how do you make sure your solder joints stay strong and don't fail?
 
Oh, man, I totally get that. I messed up tons of old radios at first in the same way. I figured out I wasn't heating the thing up for long enough, so the solder just wouldn't stick right. Once I waited for the iron to heat everything before adding the solder, the joints stopped breaking all the time.
 
I had the same issue when I was building a guitar pedal. It turned out I was moving stuff too fast after soldering, so the joints were super weak. Now, I always give everything time to cool down completely, and then I kinda shake the board to test it before I say it's done.
 
I’m not there so I can’t see, but one thing I’ve found is that hobby kit circuit boards can have contamination on the pads that need cleaning, and sometimes the solder flux isn’t enough. Of course, you don’t know that until you start soldering the leads down!

A scrub with isopropyl alcohol usually did the trick for me.
 
@barfle is right. You need to clean any crap and oxides off of the board and the parts before you try and solder. But the error most folks new to soldering make is they touch the soldering iron to the circuit card and parts and then melt the solder on the soldering iron tip and that either beads or flows onto a 'cold' joint. What you need to do is touch the soldering iron to the joint and then touch the solder to the joint allowing the solder to 'flow' into the joint. That way you know that the joint is hot enough to 'hold' the solder.
