If you’re into tinkering with electronics or taking on home projects you might find yourself needing to test high-voltage circuits. It’s an exciting endeavor but it’s essential to prioritize safety since one wrong move can be hazardous

What strategies do you use to test high-voltage circuits safely at home? I’d love to hear any tips, tools, or methods that help you stay protected while getting the job done
 
I always keep one hand in my pocket when checking stuff with high voltage. Got that tip after a small shock while testing an old amp. Keeps the current out of your chest, you know?
 
Getting a multimeter with good insulation really changed things for me. I once got zapped when fixing a microwave using a cheap meter. After getting a proper meter that was CAT-rated, testing became way safer.
 
I always discharge capacitors before touching anything. I learned that the hard way when I fixed a CRT monitor ages ago. Even when it was unplugged, the stored charge gave me a nasty surprise. Now I keep a resistor and some insulated leads around to bleed off the voltage before testing.

One thing about those old CRTs is that they can still hold a charge after you’ve heard the zap. The coating inside the tube has significant resistance, so the whole thing doesn’t discharge at once.

I have a small digital multimeter built into a probe with a non-contact sensor that lights up when it’s near a live circuit. I’m unsure of it’s threshold point, but it’s been accurate at 110VAC.
 
Cool, that setup sounds pretty useful plus it being reliable at around 110VAC is a nice perk.
