I didn't want to spend Fluke or Megger prices for something I'll only touch maybe twice a year, so I grabbed a UNI-T UT501 off eBay for around $65. Honestly thought it'd feel like a toy, but it's actually solid. It'll do 1000V which is plenty for house wiring checks. The clips and leads don't feel cheap, the backlight works (not great, but usable), and the whole thing doesn't give off that "disposable" vibe you get with most bargain testers. Sure, it's not going to replace a proper DMM... the voltage reading is just a rough indicator and there's no ohm meter built in... but for what I paid, I'm fine with that. I've already got a decent multimeter for real measurements. For occasional insulation checks, this little UNI-T gets the job done.

I agree with @justjack. That's a fantastic score for $65! I've had a similar experience with some of the better budget brands like UNI-T and Owon, so you definitely hit a sweet spot where the quality jumps dramatically for just a little more than the absolute bottom-tier stuff! For a twice-a-year insulation check on residential circuits, I think 1000V is overkill in the best possible way. The fact that the leads and enclosure feel solid is honestly the most important thing for high-voltage testing. As long as you respect its limitations on accuracy and have a good DMM backing it up, that UT501 is going to serve you well for years!
 
It's also important to mention that the UT501 has a test current that's set at 1mA, which means it won't provide accurate readings for low-capacitance circuits, such as short runs or isolated components. Just something to remember when working on board-level tasks.
